Catholic or protestant : The First Council of Nicaea (a gathering of bishops in the early days of Christianity) wanted to find a day to commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. This commemoration had to be linked to Jewish holiday traditions, since the last supper of Christ was believed to be a Jewish Passover meal. But the Jewish calendar is based on lunar and solar cycles, so the Easter celebration had to follow the same calendar.

    Freedom Day (Jum il-Helsien)

    -
    Sunday march 31, 2024
Secular holiday : Malta declared independence from the British in September 1964, ending a rule of 164 years (previous to that, France ruled Malta 1798-1800). Then, Malta became a Republic in 1974. Jum il-Helsien means Freedom Day and marks the day when all foreign forces left the island. Until that day, the British still used Malta as a naval and army base. This was quickly followed by the announcement of neutrality.
